Jiu-Jitsu
Our Jiu-Jitsu is a highly technical, yet easy to learn martial art system. It was originally used by the samurai of medieval Japan, and further developed by Gracie family of Brazil. It is a comprehensive art that encompasses self defense techniques as well as striking. However, the core of our Jiu-Jitsu is grappling - throws, pinning, ground control and escaping techniques, chokes and joint locks. Jiu-jitsu is based on the practical application of technique and leverage to overcome an opponent. It does not rely on strength, size, or speed, but rather on the intelligent use of strategy and technique to overcome such physical attributes.
What does Jiu-jitsu mean?
Jiu-jitsu can be translated as the ‘Gentle Art or Science”. However, it is important to understand the meaning correctly, since the term “jiu” explains the basic principle of the art, gentle in this context means yielding, and flexible. One should not move against the force of the opponent, but “flow with the go”, and use the strength of the opponent to ones own advantage.
